About Autism Research Lab Africa (ARLA)
Autism Research Lab Africa (ARLA), founded by Dr Edith Luhanga and Dr Skye Adams, is an interdisciplinary research initiative dedicated to transforming autism understanding, detection, and care in African contexts. ARLA's mission is to create accessible, culturally informed solutions that support autistic individuals and their families across the continent.

Funding support includes the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) and the University of the Witwatersrand.
What We Do
ARLA designs and implements innovative, scalable tools and programmes, including:
- AI-driven and mobile health applications for early autism detection
- Interdisciplinary research with experts in speech-language pathology, paediatric neurology, and engineering
- Community engagement initiatives to ensure relevance and impact
- Capacity building and training for caregivers and professionals
- Policy advocacy to expand autism services and support in Africa
