Content and Quality Analysis of Feeding Intervention Apps

Study aims

To evaluate the content and quality of publicly available parent-facing mobile health (mHealth) apps focused on feeding in children with Autism.

Background

Feeding difficulties affect between 46% and 89% of children with ASD. Although mobile health applications are increasingly available, the quality and relevance of those specifically targeting feeding challenges in this population remain uncertain.

Methods

A systematic search was conducted on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store between September and October 2024 using 15 predefined search terms (e.g., “child autism feeding”'). Applications were included if they were in English, free to download, updated within the past year, explicitly addressed feeding in children with ASD, accessible in Africa, and had more than 100 downloads. Eligible apps were evaluated using the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) framework and the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS).

Current progress or findings

Of the 326 apps identified, only two iOS apps met all inclusion criteria; no Android apps qualified. Both incorporated several BCW intervention functions, such as education, training, and incentivization; however, neither addressed the full range of behavioral strategies. MARS scores indicated moderate to high usability, with features such as sensory-friendly food routines and caregiver support tools. However, both lacked clinical validation and customization options.

Study implications 

There is a significant gap in the availability of high-quality, evidence-based, and clinically validated mHealth apps for feeding difficulties in children with ASD. The findings highlight the urgent need for digital solutions that are professionally developed and culturally sensitive.
